Picture: Pregnant WomanPregnancy, the period prior to it and afterwards, provides opportunities to help pregnant smokers stop smoking.  Not only are many women smokers motivated to stop smoking at this time, they experience higher levels of family support to stop smoking and have greater contact with the healthcare system.

Smoking in pregnancy prevalence for North Yorkshire is 12.1% and 16.7% for York. The national prevalence is 13.5%.

  • Smoking during pregnancy can cause serious pregnancy-related health problems. These include: complications during labour and an increased risk of miscarriage; premature birth; still birth; low birth-weight and sudden unexpected death in infancy.

  • Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of infant mortality by an estimated 40%.

  • Mothers under the age of 20 were almost six times as likely as those aged 35 or over to have smoked throughout pregnancy (35% and 6% respectively).

  • Mothers in routine and manual occupations were five times more likely than those in managerial and professional occupations to have smoked throughout pregnancy (20% and 4% respectively).

Stopping smoking during pregnancy is the single most important step a mother can take to benefit her health and her baby’s health.

North Yorkshire Stop Smoking Service NHS provides one-to-one or group sessions with trained stop smoking advisors.  We also have pregnancy stop smoking specialists who can offer advice about dealing with stress, weight gain and the nicotine replacement therapy available to help manage cravings.
