Health Trainers

We are pleased to announce a new service for Scarborough town.  Three part-time health trainers have been appointed to support, motivate and guide members of the public to make long term healthy lifestyle choices.

NHS North Yorkshire and York successfully bid for a Department of Health grant to support a pilot project to develop health trainer service in areas with pockets of deprivation.  The three part-time health trainers have been recruited from the local community, bringing with them a range of skills, experience and local knowledge.

The Health Trainers will be based at the Falsgrave Community Resource Centre, Seamer Road, Scarborough.  However, they will meet clients in a variety of community venues across Scarborough and will be on hand to support, motivate and guide members of the public to make long term healthy lifestyle choices. The Health Trainers  work on a one to one basis and supports the client to set achievable, realistic goals, signposting them to appropriate local services and groups as necessary.

Health Trainers offer support with:

  • healthy eating

  • losing weight

  • physical activity

  • stopping smoking

  • reducing alcohol and substance misuse

  • sexual health

  • reducing stress and anxiety.

The new service will commence in November and clients can either self refer or be referred by professionals.

Appointments can be made in advance by calling the free phone number 0800 917 7752.

Scarborough Health Trainer Service Evaluation Report January-October 2010

The Scarborough Health Trainer Service became operational in January 2010.  This report describes what the service achieved in the ten months from its inception until the end of October 2010.  The evaluation was carried out by the Centre for Health Promotion Research at Leeds Met University who analysed monitoring data and case stories routinely collected by the service, together with data collected in the course of 12 telephone and face to face interviews with clients and practice staff, including key personnel within the service.  To access the report, please click here.
