Advice and InformationPreparing For An EmergencyMajor Incident Plan This is the Major Incident Plan for NHS North Yorkshire and York. It outlines the operational arrangements to be undertaken by the PCT at the time of a major incident or emergency. It ensures that the PCT can respond effectively and efficiently and is supported by Action Cards for all key roles. The plan has been developed in compliance with the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, Cabinet Office guidance, and the NHS Emergency Planning Guidance 2005. This plan is for use with effect from 1 April 2010. Heatwave Heatwave is a prolonged period of excessively hot weather which may be accompanied by high humidity. The level of impact of a heatwave will depend upon how hot it is and how long it lasts for. Extreme heat is dangerous and has the potential to cause deaths. During relatively mild heatwaves, excess death rates are significantly, but avoidably, higher in England. The rise in the number of people who die as a result of very warm weather follows very sharply, within one or two days of the temperature rising. The key message for preventing heat-related illness and death is to keep cool! The best ways to do this include the following:
Further information on ‘Sun Safety’ can be found here. The Department of Health has issued a ‘Heatwave Plan for England’, together with associated factsheets and public information, all of which are available on the Department of Health website via the following link: A heat-Health Watch system operates in England from 1 June to the 15 September annually. During this period, the Met Office issues information regarding the likelihood of a heatwave occurring and provides alerts if threshold temperatures are, or are likely to be reached. Further information regarding the Heat-Health Watch system, including the current alert level, is available on the Met Office website. The PCT has developed a Heatwave Plan based on the requirements of the Heatwave Plan for England.
